Sheriff Laurie Dunn was born and raised in Osage County. She graduated from Burlingame High School in May 1981. Sheriff Dunn started working for the Osage County Sheriff's Office July 6th 1981, as a dispatcher. In 1985, she transferred to the jail as a jailer. Approximately two years later, she was promoted to Jail Sergeant. In 1994, she transferred to road patrol, becoming the first female road deputy. She attended the Topeka Police Academy and was certified by KLETC. In 1998, she was promoted to Criminal Investigator. From 1999-2000 and 2002 she filled in as Undersheriff. In November of 2004, she was elected Osage County Sheriff, and took office January 10th, 2005.
